Celebrating 150 years: a milestone day and a triumph for the Law Faculty

Thursday 13 March marked a landmark in the history of the Université Catholique de Lille, as it launched its 150th anniversary celebrations. Students, teachers, administrative staff, partners and neighbours came together for an emotional day of festivities, artistic performances… and a great victory for the Law Faculty!

Reopening of the Observatory

The event began with a symbolic moment: the inauguration of the Astronomical Observatory, which had been closed for 30 years. This emblematic monument was given a new lease of life, highlighted by a speech from the President-Rector, Patrick Scauflaire, followed by a moving performance of ‘My Way’ by Julia, a student from the University, sung from atop the Observatory. The public experienced this unique moment live on a giant screen, both in the Atrium of the Michel Falise building and in the garden.

Route 150 and University Cup: a collective spirit

Afternoon highlights included the spectacular Route 150, a race of original floats designed by students, associations and members of staff. Each float vied in creativity, combining a spirit of recycling, detailed decoration and fun challenges. The atmosphere on campus was electric, with supporters gathered in fan zones and the race broadcast live.

The tournament formed part of the University Cup, an inter-institutional competition organised by the FEDE, bringing together nearly 1,300 participants and spectators from around twenty schools and faculties. At the end of the race, the Law Faculty came out on top, proudly winning the trophy at this historic event. The official prize-giving ceremony took place on 25 April, once again in the presence of the President-Rector, in a warm atmosphere celebrating everyone’s cohesion and involvment.

A festive evening and a year of celebrations

The day ended on a high note with La Catho by Night, a festive evening with food trucks, music and a spectacular firework display lighting up the campus to close this exceptional event.

The 150th anniversary celebrations have only just begun, with other events scheduled throughout the year. And from next September, the University Cup will return in a new format, running throughout the year too.

Congratulations to everyone for their energy, commitment and creativity. Congratulations to our Faculty of Law on this collective victory!
