Master in Health Law and Medical Liability
Conference: “Health put to the test in detention”

On 10 April, the Faculty of Law of the Université Catholique de Lille hosted the conference “Health put to the test in detention”, organised by students of the Master’s programme in Medical Liability, in collaboration with the C3RD. Throughout the day, healthcare professionals, lawyers, prison staff and representatives from various organisations came together to examine the challenges surrounding healthcare provision for prisoners, at the intersection of health law, prison law and medical liability.

In a context of prison overcrowding and strains on the healthcare system, the discussions highlighted the persistent gap between the theoretical recognition of the rights of detained patients and their effective implementation in practice. The presentations addressed key issues such as equal access to care, security constraints, shortages of medical staff, and the specific vulnerabilities of certain groups of detainees.

This conference fostered a rich and substantive interdisciplinary dialogue. The discussions provided an opportunity to compare perspectives and identify avenues for improvement, with a view to upholding the dignity and fundamental rights of detained persons. The student organisers, for their part, played a key role in the success of the event, which was praised for the quality of its discussions and the relevance of its insights.
