Masterclass Global Actors for Peace: a 9th edition dedicated to democracy in times of crisis

From 22 to 26 September 2025, the Faculty of Law of the Université Catholique de Lille will host the 9th edition of its annual Masterclass Global Actors for Peace. This year, the event will focus on the challenges posed by the decline and transformations of democracy, a theme of crucial importance in today’s context.

A bilingual and international symposium

Organised by the C3RD, this Masterclass is a bilingual French/English symposium, exploring the role of global actors in building sustainable peace. It brings together academics and specialists from NGOs, international organisations and civil society, as well as representatives of regional and international courts.

Safeguarding democracy in times of crisis

Are democracies more peaceful? And if so, why and how? Are we witnessing a decline in democracy, or rather its transformation? Do new technologies pose a threat, or can they help protect it? Do these shifts endanger peace within societies and across the world? Can actors from civil society and international organisations still play a significant role in fostering dialogue between societies and preserving peace?

There appears to be a general consensus that democracies tend to be more peaceful – at least among themselves. Yet the strength of this link between democracy and peace remains the subject of debate. The causal mechanisms driving democracies – but also autocracies – to adopt more peaceful policies represent one of the most stimulating research agendas for the future.

These are some of the issues that will be addressed during Masterclass 2025, which seeks to deepen our understanding of the challenges posed by the retreat of democracy and its impact on peace.

A rich and varied programme

Over the course of a week, participants will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of activities, including lectures, roundtables, a film debate and an exhibition. This multidisciplinary programme is designed to foster dialogue between speakers, students and members of civil society, all committed to deciphering the transformations of our contemporary world.

Taking part in Masterclass 2025 is a unique opportunity to engage in essential discussions for the future of our democracies.
