3rd place in the Cassin competition for our DHSD Masters students!

Open to both public and private universities, the “René Cassin” Competition, organised by the René Cassin competition association, in partnership with the Faculty and the Strasbourg Bar Association, was held this year from 21 to 25 March. It pitted students from all backgrounds against each other, who came to prove their abilities as future lawyers through two written and oral tests. If the eloquence part of this competition is often the most awaited, it is because it is the focus of these tests and the end of months of work.

And this work definitely paid off, as the team from the Faculty of Law of the Université Catholique de Lille made us proud by winning the 3rd place in the competition, the results of which were announced on March 24! The Cassin Competition is a moot court competition dedicated to human rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. It consists of a first written phase based on a fictitious practical case, for which we had already been selected, followed by a moot court phase.

At the FLD, Aurélia Lamiroy supervised this competition for our Master 2 Human Rights, Security & Development students. Indeed, in addition to her participation in the competition in 2019 as a finalist, she is also in charge of accompanying and preparing the students of this Master. This is an “obligatory passage” which proves to be very formative over the months of preparation and which helps the students by confronting them with a real case. They receive a written report, based on a true event, but they have no specific information on the content of the complaint itself. There is therefore a lot of deduction and cross-referencing to be done. An additional difficulty is that the students represent either a citizen or the state itself. Indeed, in this competition, the complaint lodged is against a citizen for acts that he or she has allegedly committed.

Following this preparation, the team, composed of Candice Dufau, Bénita Cornez and Lucile Marcou, all three students in Master 2 Human Rights, Security and Development, coached by Aurélia Lamiroy, PhD Assistant in charge of the “Solidarity” projects, was ready to face their opponents from Paris Saclay, Tours and Paris Assas.

The pleading phase took place from 21/03 to 24/03 at the Council of Europe. And it is among the 38 teams present that our students were able to make the difference. This is a great recognition for the Faculty of Law of the Université Catholique de Lille, but especially for Candice, Bénita, Lucile and their coach Aurélia, to whom we send our congratulations!
