Dr. Pedro Villarreal is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. He is manager of the project “International Health Governance”. In 2017, he received the prize for the best doctoral dissertation in law and social sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico for his work, “Pandemics and Law: A Global Governance Perspective”.

Dr. Rashad Ibadov is the Founding Director of the Law Program and an Assistant Professor of Law at ADA University, Baku Azerbaijan, and a Visiting Professor of Law at the Catholic University of Lille since 2018, where he has been teaching Legal History and Philosophy. Dr. Ibadov received his Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degree from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy (2013), LL.M degree from the Faculty of Law, Lund University, Sweden (2004-2006) and LL.B degree (high honor) from the School of Law and Social Sciences, Khazar University, Baku, Azerbaijan (1999-2003).
Mr. Ibadov has been in a number of research programs at Harvard Law School (Fellow in the Human Rights Program, 2019-2020; Fellow in the VSVR Program, 2009-2010), Boalt Hall School of Law, the University of California, Berkeley (Visiting Scholar, 2008-2009), School of Law, Catholic University of Lille (Atlas Program Fellow, 2017) and School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow (Visiting Teaching Fellow, 2014).

Human Rights vs. Animal Rights?
A Philosophical Journey from Human Exceptionalism to Transspecies Universalism

Dr Saskia Stucki is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. In 2018/19, she was a visiting researcher at the Harvard Law School, where she worked on her postdoctoral research project Trilogy on a Legal Theory of Animal Rights (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation). From 2012 to 2016, she was the coordinator of the doctoral programme “Law and Animals” at the University of Basel Law School. Saskia studied law at the University of Basel, where she also obtained her PhD in 2015. The resulting book on Fundamental Rights for Animals (Grundrechte für Tiere, Nomos 2016) received four awards, among them the biennial award of the Swiss Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy. Her research interests include animal rights, law and ethics; theories of rights, personhood and human rights; (feminist) legal theory; international humanitarian law; environmental and climate change law.

Valentina Volpe est Maître de conférences en droit international public et co-directrice du LL.M. en Droits de l’Homme, Sécurité, et Développement à la Faculté de Droit de l’Université Catholique de Lille. Elle est également chercheuse principale affiliée et ancienne chercheuse principale à l’Institut Max Planck en Droit public comparé et en Droit International à Heidelberg, ainsi que professeure adjointe à SciencesPo Paris, à l’Université LUISS Guido Carli à Rome, et à l’Université de Los Andes à Bogota.
Valentina a effectué ses études de droit en Italie, en France et aux États-Unis. Elle est une ancienne chercheuse invitée à la Yale Law School et titulaire d’un doctorat summa cum laude en Droit et Théorie Juridique de l’Institut Italien des Sciences Humaines (SUM) (actuellement Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa).
Ses intérêts de recherche portent sur les domaines du droit public international et comparé, et plus spécifiquement sur la gouvernance globale, les acteurs non étatiques, la promotion de la démocratie et les droits de l’Homme.
Elle a également été professeure invitée à l’Université de Sciences Politiques et de Droit de Chine (CUPL) à Beijing, l’Université pour la paix (UPEACE) à San José, au Costa Rica, et à l’Université de Mannheim.
Avant de débuter sa carrière académique, Valentina a travaillé comme responsable de projet dans une ONG de base active dans les domaines de la coopération internationale et de la protection des droits de l’Homme.
Dean Ioannis Panoussis
Co-directors Master’s in Human Rights, Security and Development – FLD
Ioannis K. Panoussis est actuellement Doyen de la Faculté de Droit de l’Université Catholique de Lille (Lille/Paris) et délégué au développement international pour le compte de l’Université. Il co-dirige un Master en droit international et européen, spécialité « Droits de l’Homme, Sécurité, Développement ». Ses matières de spécialisation sont le droit international public, le droit international et européen des droits de l’Homme, le droit international humanitaire, le droit des réfugiés. Il a exercé des fonctions d’expert pour le compte du UNHCR (juge/assesseur UNHCR à la Cour nationale du droit d’asile) et pour le compte du ministère des affaires étrangères (mission de formation en Afghanistan de personnels impliqués dans la protection des droits de l’Homme au niveau des ministères, des organisations internationales et des ONG). Il intervient en tant qu’expert à l’Ecole nationale d’administration (ENA) et à l’Institut d’Etudes Humanitaires Internationales d’Aix Marseille Université. Il est régulièrement invité dans plusieurs établissements prestigieux (Institut international des droits de l’Homme à Strasbourg, EDHEC, IESEG, IEP de Lille) et il a exercé la fonction d’évaluateur pour le Fonds National de Recherche Scientifique belge.
