On Monday 21 September 2026, the Faculty of Law of the Universit\u00e9 Catholique de Lille<\/strong> launched the 10th edition of its international Global Actors for Peace Masterclass<\/strong>, under the theme \u201cReshaping Futures<\/em>\u201d. Organised by the C3RD<\/a><\/strong>, the Research Centre on Risk and Law, the opening took place on the International Day of Peace<\/strong>, making the occasion all the more meaningful.<\/p>\n

For this landmark 10th edition, students, academics, researchers and international experts have come together around a shared ambition: to explore the role of law and international actors in addressing the major challenges facing our world today, and to reflect on how more peaceful futures can be built.<\/p>\n

Looking back on ten years of encounters and dialogue<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Welcoming participants, Sarah Durelle-Marc<\/strong>, Dean of the Faculty of Law<\/strong>, reflected on the journey since the very first edition of the Masterclass, expressing her hope that the initiative will continue for at least another decade.<\/p>\n

Delphine Pollet-Panoussis<\/strong>, Director of the C3RD<\/strong>, highlighted the importance of the Masterclass within the Faculty\u2019s academic and research activities. Ioannis Panoussis<\/strong>, Vice-President – Vice-Rector for International Development at the Universit\u00e9 Catholique de Lille<\/strong>, also addressed the audience, expressing his pride in seeing the Masterclass continue to thrive ten years after it was first launched.<\/p>\n

The event also marks the beginning of the academic year for Master\u2019s students, particularly those studying for a Master\u2019s degree in International and European Law. It offers a unique opportunity to meet and engage with specialists from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, fostering dialogue, discussion and the exchange of ideas.<\/p>\n

Ten years of exploring the challenges of peace<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Sonia Le Gouriellec<\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in Political Science, researcher and author<\/strong>, and Valentina Volpe<\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in Public International Law, Co-Director of the DHSD Master\u2019s programme and Director of IELS<\/strong>, then looked back at the past ten years of the Masterclass.<\/p>\n

Through a wealth of events, discussions and distinguished guests, the initiative has become a key moment in the Faculty\u2019s academic calendar. This retrospective highlighted the remarkable diversity of topics explored and perspectives brought together over the years, before turning to a particularly powerful contribution.<\/p>\n

A message from Dr Denis Mukwege, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of the opening session, students had the opportunity to watch a special video message from Dr Denis Mukwege<\/strong>, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate<\/strong>, addressed to the participants of the Masterclass.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of world will you help to build?\u201d<\/strong> This is the question Dr Mukwege puts directly to the students.<\/p>\n

Turning to the rapid development of artificial intelligence, he stresses that the key question is not simply what technology can do, but what societies want it to do. Technological development, he argues, must remain at the service of humanity, ethics and the common good.<\/p>\n

Dr Mukwege also underlines the crucial role universities can play in building peace. Lecturers, researchers and students are all actors for peace.<\/strong> Research can contribute to shaping public policy, while knowledge can help bring injustices to light and provide a foundation for collective action.<\/p>\n

His message resonates strongly with both the theme of this 10th edition and the International Day of Peace:<\/p>\n

\u201cInjustice is never inevitable; there can be no lasting peace without justice; there can be no lasting peace without equality; and no one builds peace alone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

With \u201cReshaping Futures<\/em>\u201d, the Masterclass seeks not only to equip students with the tools to understand the profound transformations shaping our world, but also to encourage them to consider the role they themselves can play in shaping the futures ahead.<\/p>\n

The first conference sets the tone for the week<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

The opening conference was delivered by Prof. Dr Anne Peters<\/strong> of the Max Planck Institute<\/strong>, on the theme \u201cReshaping Futures in an Age of Monsters<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Her presentation began with a series of fundamental questions: Is international law still necessary? By whom? And for what purposes?<\/p>\n

These questions provided an opportunity to revisit the essential functions of law: enabling individuals and groups to coexist, preventing and resolving conflicts, and contributing to the pursuit of justice.<\/p>\n

In a world characterised by profound uncertainty, international law also serves as an essential infrastructure for international relations. It helps to stabilise expectations, build trust and make collective action possible. These functions are particularly apparent in areas such as ceasefire negotiations, arms control and peace processes.<\/p>\n

The opening conference thus set the tone for a week centred on a fundamental question: how can we rethink our futures in the face of the transformations reshaping the contemporary world?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A week dedicated to dialogue, reflection and peace<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

For its 10th edition, the Global Actors for Peace Masterclass<\/strong> continues to place dialogue, encounters and collective reflection at the heart of its approach to peacebuilding.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to engage with a diverse programme of lectures, round-table discussions, artistic performances, a film screening and discussion, and a retrospective exhibition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
