In the field of law, many women have helped transform society and advance fundamental rights. Among them, three stand out: <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Gis\u00e8le Halimi<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Simone Veil<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jeanne Chauvin<\/span><\/span>. Through their determination and courage, they paved the way for major advances in the recognition of women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Gis\u00e8le Halimi: a lawyer in the service of freedom<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"1213\">A leading figure of the French Bar and of the feminist movement, lawyer and former Member of the French National Assembly <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Gis\u00e8le Halimi<\/span><\/span> devoted much of her career to defending women\u2019s rights. One of her most notable commitments came during the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bobigny trial<\/span><\/span> in 1972, where she defended a young girl prosecuted for having had an abortion following rape. Her advocacy played a key role in the adoption of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Veil Law on the legalisation of abortion in France<\/span><\/span> in 1975, which legalised voluntary termination of pregnancy in France.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1582\">Beyond her fight for abortion rights, Halimi championed several major causes, including the recognition of rape as a criminal offence under French law in 1980. Through her political and international engagement, particularly with <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">UNESCO<\/span><\/span> and the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">United Nations<\/span><\/span>, she helped advance women\u2019s rights far beyond France.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1582\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Simone Veil: political and legal leadership for women\u2019s rights<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"2138\">At the institutional level, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Simone Veil<\/span><\/span> remains one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century. A survivor of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">The Holocaust<\/span><\/span>, she first pursued a career in the judiciary before being appointed Minister of Health in 1974. In this role, she championed the law decriminalising abortion in France, a landmark reform adopted after intense parliamentary debates and widely regarded as a major step forward for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2688\">In 1979, she became the first woman elected President of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">European Parliament<\/span><\/span>. Throughout her career, she played a central role in European integration and in the promotion of human rights. She later served on the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Constitutional Council of France<\/span><\/span> and consistently advocated for equality between women and men. Her induction into the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Panth\u00e9on<\/span><\/span> in 2018, alongside her husband <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Antoine Veil<\/span><\/span>, symbolises national recognition of her exceptional life and achievements.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2688\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jeanne Chauvin: a pioneer of the French Bar<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2739\" data-end=\"3042\">Before Halimi and Veil, another woman had already opened the way in the legal profession: <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jeanne Chauvin<\/span><\/span>. In 1901, she became the first woman to plead before a French court after campaigning for changes to legislation that had previously barred women from practising as lawyers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3044\" data-end=\"3309\">Holding degrees in both law and philosophy, Chauvin fought for professional equality and for women\u2019s access to legal careers. Her determination broadened opportunities for future generations and gradually secured women\u2019s place within the legal and judicial spheres.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3044\" data-end=\"3309\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A lasting legacy for future generations<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3356\" data-end=\"3566\">The history of law has been shaped by women who broke barriers and advanced fundamental rights. Their courage and determination continue to inspire new generations of lawyers and citizens committed to equality.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3568\" data-end=\"4158\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">At the Faculty of Law of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Universit\u00e9 Catholique de Lille<\/span><\/span>, their legacy is recognised through academic initiatives and spaces that bear their names \u2014 including the Simone Veil lecture hall on our campus in <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Issy-les-Moulineaux<\/span><\/span>, near <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Paris<\/span><\/span>, as well as graduating classes named in honour of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Gis\u00e8le Halimi<\/span><\/span> (2021\u20132022) and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mireille Delmas-Marty<\/span><\/span> (2024\u20132025).
