On 17 October<\/strong>, from 6pm to 8.30pm<\/strong>, the Faculty of Law<\/strong> of the Universit\u00e9 Catholique de Lille<\/strong> will be hosting a must-attend conference and debate focusing on the Bobigny trial<\/strong>, a key moment<\/strong> in the history of women\u2019s rights in France<\/strong>. The event will be based around the play \u2018Reconstitution : The Bobigny Trial<\/strong><\/em>\u2019, adapted by Sophie and Basile Ader<\/strong> and will be followed by a discussion<\/strong> on the far-reaching impact of this trial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Bobigny trial<\/strong>, held in 1972<\/strong>, marked a decisive turning point<\/strong> in the defence of women\u2019s rights<\/strong>. The case stems from the tragic story of Marie-Claire Chevalier<\/strong>, a young girl who had an abortion<\/strong> after being raped<\/strong>, with the help of her mother, Mich\u00e8le Chevalier<\/strong>. At the time, abortion was severely punished by law<\/strong>. Lawyer Gis\u00e8le Halimi<\/strong> turned this trial into a political platform<\/strong> to denounce inequality of access to abortion<\/strong>, supported by iconic figures<\/strong> such as Simone de Beauvoir<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A trial that made history<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The verdict handed down in Bobigny was seen as a significant step forward<\/strong>. Marie-Claire Chevalier was acquitted<\/strong>, while the other defendants received light sentences<\/strong>. This trial laid the foundations<\/strong> for a movement that would, three years later<\/strong>, lead to the Veil law, decriminalising abortion in France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The play \u2018Reconstitution : The Bobigny Trial<\/strong><\/em>\u2019 offers a unique opportunity to reflect on this historic moment<\/strong> and its impact on contemporary society<\/strong>. The staging of this work raises essential questions about justice, feminism, and women\u2019s right to control their own bodies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
